Continue to learn and evolve – both personally and professionally, urges Parames Sundaramurthy
Parameswaran Sundaramurthy (Parames) is Sabre India’s first employee to complete 15 years with the business. Coincidentally, Sabre India also completed 15 years in December 2019. This interview conducted by Amartya Jha, one of our most recent hires (intern from the batch of 2020), recognizes the commitment and journey of Parames as he narrates personal anecdotes, career milestones and more.
Excerpts (transcript) from the interview below:
Share some moments from your Sabre journey that you are particularly fond of.
The last 15 years have truly been a journey of learning and discovery for me. There are plenty of memorable moments to share. Some of them that stand out would be:
My first trip to a customer location in Germany. The thrill of being able to travel outside India for the first time was truly exhilarating.
I take tremendous pride in counting each customer and their journey I have been a part of— in terms of collaborating with each of them to deliver new capabilities. It has certainly been one of the highlights of my career so far.
What was your 1st job role like? Has it evolved a lot over time?
My first role in Sabre was as a programmer developing custom solutions. The role has of course evolved over the years as I have gotten the opportunity to lead, train and mentor a team of developers.
The market is also evolving rapidly and as we see ourselves pivoting our strategy to be at the center of retailing, fulfillment and distribution, I expect all our roles to evolve – fulfilling Sean’s vision for Sabre in 2025 of creating a personalized market for travel.
What motivates you to come to work each day?
The joy of being able to motivate and lead my team to become the best that they can is perhaps the strongest motivator for me.
Also we are at a critical inflection point as a software technology company and the travel market – given the recent global environment is poised to look different. Being part of a company that can get to drive this industry forward is very exciting.
15 years is a big milestone. Do you have any tips and tricks for youngsters/starters like us to help us adapt and evolve better in our respective roles?
I consider myself to be a life-long learner and the only trick/tip I can provide is to continue to learn and evolve oneself not just from a work perspective but from a personal perspective as well.
What made you continue to stay at Sabre?
It’s got to be the people who are a part of this great company. It may sound cliché but Sabre truly is one big family and the friendships I have developed here are deep and strong.
We have a culture of openness and one that fosters cultivation of relationships – this is a powerful combination that you don’t see in many organizations.
Travel of course, is another important factor. The fact that we can visit so many different places and learn from so many different cultures is truly awesome.
What are the 3 things that you like the most about Sabre?
People, culture and most importantly, the outstanding leadership team.
If you have to redo your tenure at Sabre how will you go about that? Would you like to change anything?
I really don’t look at the past with any regrets at all. I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have had a truly wonderful ride so far and I wouldn’t change any of it!
What positive impact Sabre had on your family? Would you like to share it with us voluntarily?
My family and I have had very humble beginnings and both my parents sacrificed a lot to educate me and my sister. Sabre was the first company that provided me a chance to showcase my skills and has truly been the bedrock of what I have been able to achieve so far in my life.
My wife also works for Sabre so we are truly a “Sabre” family and we owe everything we are in life today to this great company.
Is there anything that has surprised you about your chosen career path?
Not really. I always wanted to be in software development and things have panned out the way I expected it to be.
Which destination is top on your travel list when normal travelling resumes worldwide? Why?
Phi Phi Island because of the beautiful beaches.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Explore about super cars with my son. We both are passionate about cars.
In your 15 years of service, you may have done a couple of team building activities. Talk about the ones that were both fun and insightful.
It was a meet and greet event when we had Mid and Back Office teams gathering in Bangalore office (with folks from both Singapore and Dallas offices). It involved introduction with 10 slides in a deck that only comprised pictures and no words. The intent was to describe one’s hobby, passion, ambition, family, upbringing, pets, etc.
It was a great way to bond better as we got to know about each other. The fact that we all belonged to different parts of the world added to the excitement.
Which Sabre value you think brings out the best in you?
Rigor
Which leader do you admire and why?
Has to be Steve Jobs! His vision on what a product must do and the change it can brings about in the livelihoods of literally millions of people is something the world will never forget.
If you could change something in the world, what would it be?
Poverty
