Canadian travel entrepreneur donates to Sabre’s Passport to Freedom
Funds go to scholarship program
TORONTO, July 16, 2013 – SkyLink Travel Group has donated $10,000 (USD) to Sabre’s Passport to Freedom, the company’s initiative to engage the travel industry to end human trafficking.
SkyLink founder and Chief Executive Officer Surjit Babra presented a check to Sabre officials this week.
“Human trafficking is a horrific, global problem that needs to be addressed by everyone,” Babra said. “I admire the effort Sabre has undertaken to bring attention to this issue and engage the travel industry to help. I’m proud to help this important cause.”
Babra has been recognized by the travel industry for his extensive charity work in Canada and across the globe.
Sabre officials said the funds donated by Babra will help fund a scholarship program the travel technology company is establishing for survivors of human trafficking. The initial pilot of the scholarship program is in development this year and is a collaborative effort between Sabre, The Travel Institute, and Polaris. Sabre is currently looking for airline and hotel partners to also take part in program development.
“We are grateful for the generous contribution by Mr. Surjit Babra,” said Barbra Anderson, Sabre’s global director of corporate responsibility. “It’s very meaningful to have a prominent member of the travel industry join us to end human trafficking and provide assistance to the survivors.”
Sabre is the first global travel technology company to sign the tourism Code of Conduct (The Code), an international tourism-focused initiative against human trafficking co-funded by the Swiss Government (SECO) and other private sector investments, and supported by End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT) International, with UNICEF and the World Tourism Organization acting as advisory partners.
Last month Sabre hosted”Trafficking in Persons Heroes,” a select group of individuals from around the world recognized by the U.S. State Department for their efforts in the fight against human trafficking. Sabre officials and the Heroes exchanged ideas and shared their experiences.
As part of the company’s continued commitment to Passport to Freedom, in July Sabre will host a training session on human trafficking for law enforcement officers in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
